Opening Prayer

Shortened Transcript
In Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Empire knows Jedi can be found because they cannot ignore people in need. Compassion gives them away. Even when Obi-Wan wants to stay hidden, helping others is part of who he is.
Jesus says something similar in John 13:35: people will know His disciples by their love. Our faith should be visible in the way we care for others, even when love is inconvenient, difficult, or costly.

Compassion Leaves a Trail
Think about the places you normally spend time during the week and choose three people you regularly encounter.
Beside each name, write one simple way you could show compassion to them.
Then choose one action you will actually take this week.
Reflection: If compassion left a trail behind you, where would people see it?

Was it easy or difficult to identify opportunities for compassion?
What normally stops you from helping someone?

Spiritual Practice
Get Caught Loving Someone
For the next seven days, look for one simple opportunity each day to show compassion through encouragement, listening, helping, forgiving, or including someone.
At the end of the day, ask:
“Did my actions make the love of Jesus visible today?”
Pray: “Jesus, let Your love give me away.”
Closing Prayer
Conclude with a prayer that acknowledges the Holy Spirit's presence and asks for continued guidance and protection in the journey of faith.
Sample Prayer:
Jesus, You told us that the world would recognize Your disciples by their love. Help us live in a way that makes Your love visible. Give us courage when compassion is inconvenient. Help us love people we understand and people we do not understand, people who agree with us and people who do not. Open our eyes to the people around us who need kindness, mercy, friendship, or help. May our love leave a trail that always points back to You. Amen.
Notes From The Nerd Pastor:
The Empire knows the Jedi can be found because compassion keeps pulling them out of hiding. Jesus says His followers should be recognizable in much the same way: by our love. That love may look like listening, helping, welcoming, forgiving, or simply noticing someone others have overlooked. The goal is to leave a trail of compassion that points people toward Jesus.
Resource Notes:
The sermon connects the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi with Jesus’ teaching in John 13:33–35.
For group discussion, participants do not need extensive knowledge of Star Wars. The important idea is simply that the Empire knows surviving Jedi can be discovered because their instinct to show compassion makes it difficult for them to ignore someone who needs help.
The study then compares that recognizable compassion with Jesus’ statement that His followers will be recognized by their love.

Obi-Wan Kenobi / Ben Kenobi – A Jedi Master who survives the fall of the Jedi and hides from the Empire while watching over Luke Skywalker.
Jedi – Members of an ancient order in Star Wars devoted to the Force and traditionally committed to protecting others.
The Empire – The authoritarian government that rises after the fall of the Galactic Republic and hunts the remaining Jedi.
Inquisitors – Force-sensitive agents serving the Empire who hunt Jedi survivors.
Grand Inquisitor – The leader of the Imperial Inquisitors. He explains that Jedi can be found by exploiting their instinct to show compassion.
The Force – The mysterious energy at the center of the Star Wars universe that Jedi seek to understand and follow.
Compassion – Recognizing another person’s suffering and being moved to respond with care.
Disciple – Someone who follows Jesus and seeks to learn from and live like Him.
New Commandment – Jesus’ instruction in John 13 that His disciples should love one another as He has loved them.
Known By Our Love – Jesus’ teaching that love should visibly identify His followers to the world.
