In this sermon, we explore the captivating themes of power and fear as depicted in the anime "Chainsaw Man." The series portrays the concept of power being derived from fear, a theme that resonates with the power of names and words in the Bible.
A key focus is the parallel between the devils in "Chainsaw Man," who gain strength from human fears, and the biblical principle that the name of Jesus holds immense power over fear and darkness. We delve into the story of Jesus and the demon named Legion in Mark 5:1-13, illustrating how the power of Jesus' name commands and controls even a legion of demons. This biblical account contrasts with the depiction of fear as a source of power for the devils in the anime.
We also reflect on how understanding the power in Jesus’ name can transform our approach to fear and challenges in our lives. Just as characters in "Chainsaw Man" confront and sometimes harness fear, we, as believers, are called to confront our fears through faith in the powerful name of Jesus.
This sermon offers a unique perspective on the traditional Christian understanding of power, fear, and authority, using a popular cultural reference to deepen our comprehension and appreciation of biblical truths.

Notes From The Nerd Pastor:
Chainsaw Man was a bit of a flash-in-the-pan moment. It rocked the anime world and has since fizzled into memes and random highlights. This is mainly due to the anime taking so much time to garner a second season, and the manga has progressed far past the cast of characters from the first season.
It’s important to note that this anime is also very much an adult anime. It discusses some seriously dark themes and has suggestive content littered throughout the episodes. This is not intended for your youth group's younger members and is best reserved for a young adult Bible Study.
That being said, it’s hard to deny just how powerful of a connection is made in this sermon. It’s not enough that I write these and am surprised to see just how tangible the connection is between the selected media and the scripture for the week. In a way, this one wrote itself. While the remainder of the season (and through the rest of the manga, as far as I know) never really brings up this point of lore again, this initial fact is compelling enough for this to be a fascinating exploration point for Christians.
